Chickenshed's humble origins almost 40 years ago in an actual chicken shed have been transformed over the years into an up-to-date practical theatre complex with educational facilities for all ages and abilities from performance workshops for children and senior citizens to degree-level courses. It is well known for its all-inclusive policy and all areas have full disability access. The building has recently been extended, adding a new studio space and an outdoor amphitheatre to the existing main space. As well as these, the bar area is often used for events such as the Community Chorus, comedy and jazz performances.

The front of house area has also been refurbished and offers a fresh large modern area with plenty of seating, including a designated dining area for the restaurant concession run by the popular local restaurant, Brooklyn's Grill, offering a comprehensive menu and possibly the best milkshakes in North London.
