This concert features the world prèmiere of a new Golden Fanfare by Francisco Coll which has been especially commissioned by the Goldsmiths’ Company for the City of London Festival. Like Olivier Messiaen among composers before him, Coll has the rare gift of synaesthesia, enabling him exactly to visualise musical sounds in terms of colours – a situation that puts him in an ideal position to translate the colour of gold into music. The work forms part of a programme which includes Jim Parker’s Golden Section and an arrangement of Bach’s Goldberg Variations – a gleaming celebration by some of the country’s best brass players, fittingly marking the Festival’s Golden Jubilee and the Goldsmiths’ Company’s Gold exhibition.
